Air conditioning leaks and the lack of spares!

I have a simple case of a leak on my air conditioning system on my

1998 Disco 1 Tdi Diesel Auto.

The leak is from a corroded pipe that comes from the left hand side of the air receiver dryer. The leak is on this streel pipe only, just below the condensor input pipe (the rubber one). In true style, I have had great difficulty in getting a pipe! I can get a condensor assembly (which I don't need), which appears to have the air receiver drier pipes attached, or I can get a receiver drier. It's not clear, even from the Land Rover dealer whether the receiver dryer pipes come with the component. The pipes are not listed on the EPC!

Anyone know of a good source for components of this nature, or is it back to the breakers for a search?

Cheers

Lee swears that its impossible to get these pipes made, though I´d try some of the specialist pipemakers, someone like Burgaflex.

THE best people I know are in Rochdale, Dale Hose - they take it as a personal insult if they can´t make a fitting and pipe.

Thanks for the info. That's the second time that I've heard of Dale Hose mentioned. The first time was the other day by the guy in the parts department at the Land Rover dealer! I'll check 'em out.

I've got a leak as well and when I get the tuit I'll take it to a proper aircon place. It must be possible to braze in a new length of pipe. Is it "streel" or ali/copper?

Are you near Rochdale ?

I'm in Runcorn in Cheshire, but work in Stockport, so it's not too far a hike (about 20 miles - half an hour or so - from work).

Just a mild steel pipe. It's corroded where it sits onto a bracket, along a three inch length near the bend at the rop of the pipe. Difficult both to join a new piece or to try and repair. It'll be a far easier and better job to get a replacement piece. I had my car into an air-con place in Stockport to be re-gassed, and to have a dye put into the system to help diagnose leaks. The dye worked(!) The air- con worked beautifully for about half an hour after it was re-gassed, then by the next morning (as all the pressure leaked through the duff pipe), it was back to no air-con! Unfortunately, they quoted me a big price (=A3560), ad they said that they'd have to replace the condenser (which isn't at fault). I guess as it comes as part of the condenser 'assembly', then this is where the elevated cost comes from (plus labour). Interestingly enough, when checking at a Land Rover dealer, the condenser price came out at a whopping =A3634 just for the part!! I've no itention of paying this sort of price to effectively fix a single leak, hence the quest for the pipe!!

Try compression fittings from somewhere like HRP (Warrington) - they are flared with a 90 deg. cone - let me know if you want to borrow the flaring tool. It sounds like you could just use two compression fittings and a piece of air-con rated copper pipe. What diameter are you looking for ? We have 1/4, 3/8, 4, 6, 8 and 10mm pipe at work that´s rated for it.

Haven't taken the pipe off yet, but it'll only be around 1/4 or 6 mil. Thanks for the offer of the flaring tool. I may need it if I don't get any joy tomorrow in finding a pipe!

Just a minor correction M'lud - I didn't swear but I do recall all my own efforts being fruitless.

Though I do wish the OP better luck than I had - Mine was listed on EPC but was a bitch to find.

And a further footnote - my pipe one of the pair which run under the battery, was alloy and not steel.
