Gudday, I've just bought a 76 2 door Rangie off ebay. The guy was not completely honest about her condition and well, I've got a bit of a fixer uper on my hands! This is my first Rangie and I'm not at all familiar with their idiosyncracies...what I have found out is that the self leveling unit over the back diff is completely missing..can anyone tell me is it necessary? and can it be replaced by anything else? Also I have found a clunking coming from the engine and it turns out to be the harmonic balance pulley on the front of the crank...it is flopping around through about 30 degrees (engine not running), what size socket do I need to get the crank dog off with does anyone know? I know that my 3/4 socket set is not good enough and will probably have to buy a deep throat one for it. Well there is plenty more wrong with her but I'll keep them for another post! You don't really need the self leveller although you may need to use stiffer rear springs to compensate. Most of the ones fitted to early Range Rovers haven't worked for years anyway :-)
To get the crank dog/bolt off you need a DEEP 1 1/4 inch socket.
Check the front edges of the doors, the doors are difficult to get hold of these days and the sooner you nip any corrosion around the hinges in the bud, the better !
