Info needed. Bought 90 2.5td, Found engine had cracked pistons (all 4) as history is unknown as anyone any ideal what the cause was likly to have been and what to check durring and after rebuild, mervben.

Possibly taken wading and ingested water. I'd check that the con-rods are still good as per the crankshaft and the crankshaft bearings. Worst case would be the cylinder linings distorted along with the head.
Please note - this is not based on any specific knowledge of the LR TD engine, but past experience with a Peugot engine that had tried to breathe water.

thats the turbo that inadvertently caused that . is a common fault on 2.5TD engines which use 19j block .
the 12j normal aspirated 2.5 engine is fine , but add the turbo to it and thats when probs start with cracked pistons

Condition normal. Poor engine design. Someone should have been shot for that engine. They redeemed themselves with later engines though.
