Diesel LPG conversions?

Greetings,

Does anyone have any experience of a td5 lpg conversion? Is it worth doing?

You wont save much fuel but it would go like a rocket!! BHP would be up by about 30 - 40% LPG + large intercooler + chip = big fun!! ( oh and big bills!)

You would basically have to convert it to a petrol td5. Lower compressions etc. You would then not be able to put diesel in it anymore. Not worth doing by a massive margin. Yours Gmacz

Depends what you expect to get out of it. Forget about fuel economy, what you will get however is loads more power, depending how much gas you actually add in.

I did have a 200 Tdi with LPG kit on it but I don't know how a TD5 would react. Might be worth having a word with Car Autogas in Stoke - they do the kit. Tel: 01782 838565

That's called a V8 :)

That idea went out the window a long time ago. I presume the OP is thinking of LPG + diesel.

From what I have read i'd expect more power and a smallish gain on mpg, but obviously I never trust the blurb alone. Hence I offered the question to the floor for the learned ones to comment upon ;)

How did you find the 200 behaved with it on?

Yup, probably is worth a call. thanks.

Had a lot of fun with it (The 200), road testing it up the M6. Gave a few V8s quite a shock. Eventually set it up to give good power increase with about break even on fuel economy. Had a 25 litre tank along the wheel box in the rear. Initially we had a micro switch on the fuel pump to switch off the LPG when you took your foot off the accelerator. Later replaced that with a pressure switch activated by turbo boost. Also had temperature sensor to hold off LPG until engine had warmed up as there was talk of it being undesirable to burn LPG when cold. We also modified the vaporiser and used a small spud mixer cos otherwise you get too much LPG in.

Ours was quite a crude system compared with the ones Car Autogas are fitting.

not quite true, you can fumigate it with LPG and run on a mixture. can't see it being worth it on such an engine though, and it'd probably be difficult to get it tuned right unless you can burn your own eproms for the engine management.

I was reading in one of the comics the other day about a 200tdi disco that's used for pro rallying. It has an LPG system squirting into the air intake somehow. gives the rally spec cars a real run for their money.
