I was filling up at our local ASDA t'other day with said grin on my face, watching normal motorists paying 42p/litre more than me (LPG =

32.6p; unleaded = 74.9p). The bloke waiting in the queue behind me to use the unleaded pump was getting a bit agitated - I think he thought the grin was because I was taking my time to fill up and deliberately delay him :-)

The only downside to LPG is the time it takes to fill up. Having said that, some pumps are much quicker than others.

how many miles per litre are you getting on gas as i am thinking of getting a 97 discovery ES 3.9 auto with gas conversion

just wondering if its much cheaper to run than a desiel one

It takes quite a while to fill the 2003 Discovery - there seems to be a common fault with the filler pipe. One has to control the flow of the fuel as too much causes blowback to a spectacular degree! Takes a good 10 minutes to completely fill the tank, sometimes more, depending on the pump.

Hi Chris, I get about 200 miles on 64litres of LPG, so about 14mpg. On petrol I was getting 15/16mpg. It's not so much the mpg figure that I love but the cost per mile - about 10p on LPG vs 21p on petrol (using local prices). My previous Discovery - a 300Tdi - gave about 28mpg which worked out at 12p per mile.

I have details of all fuel purchases on a spread sheet for tax purposes - I use the Discovery for both business and personal use. It makes comparisons like this very easy.

Yeah, but in that time you've pumped 80-odd litres and I've only managed 64! Heaven help me when I get the extra tanks fitted .. I'll probably nod off at the pump :-)

probably not, but it's more fun :-)

a well-sorted TDi will cost about the same to run, but unless you tune it up a bit, won't be so fast. If you tune it up a lot, it'll not be so cheap to run.

FWIW, our Disco, with blanked off the EGR, max. revs set to just under 5000, and fuelling turned up to the point where it'll still pass the MOT, does about 29mpg running (sensibly) solo, and will get up to about 100 on the clock, given enough road - I doubt it's doing 29 mpg then though...

a 3.9 auto should go a bit faster, and, on LPG with a properly-sorted system and at current prices, cost about the same to run.

Think the answer is to have one's own tank, like someone else I know who is a regular poster to this NG! Mind you, one needs the space to go down this avenue....

Yeah; but space is rather at a premium here. No chance of getting a tank installed :-(

Plan to retire to the countryside - if the Government of the day allows it!

The single hole tanks with multi-valve take 8mm whereas the 4 hole tanks take about 15mm (IIRC) on the fill side. Makes quite a difference to the fill rate.

that'd explain mine -the Ford has a single-hole donut tank. Fill rate is crap, and also I don't like a rigid connection to the filler - unless you can mount the filler very rigidly, which you can't in most cases, it'll flex the joint to the copper pipe when you put the filler on and off - which can make it work loose. Did this on mine...

Yeah, all the pumps round here are dog-slow, plus the BPs cut-off at 100 litres which is a bit of a pain as you have to go in and pay before you can carry on filling-up.
