Hi,
The Defender has started a small shudder (that seems to be getting bigger) going from stand still to driving in first. I assume my clutch is going (and also I assume also that it is better to do something before it "goes"). I have the feeling though that it may be something other than the clutch (polybush type stuff?) but am not sure what to look for...
Any pointers?

Guy, can you feel the shudder through the clutch pedal? If so it might be the clutch springs - either falling apart of pushing through the pressure plate.

I'd suspect the gearbox and engine mounts first then the gearbox-engine bellhousing bolts.
Could be oil contamination on the clutch plate. Any sign of oil loss in the gearbox / engine or it exiting the drain in the bell housing?

Yes, in fact I have noticed that there were a few drips of oil coming out of the bell housing hole at the bottom.
I ought to check the gearbox oil level again, but I can't undo the torx filler plug any more, it went in to the garage briefly and they did it up so bloody tight.....
I assume there is a seal to be replaced, Is this going to be a huge operation? And if contaminated with oil, is the clutch plate dead?

Thats normal. Its a Land Rover LOL.
Before you do anything else, including replacing mounts, bushes, seals and clutches, put the handbrake on firmly, start the engine, put it in gear, give it some revs and bring the clutch up such that it slips. Dont be too gentle.
This sometimes helps.

As to contamination with oil etc, the answer is usually "yes" - having said all that, if you are going to the trouble and expense of changing seals in there, its usually good practise to replace the clutch anyway. Unless its new(ish).

My handbrake did that last year, grabbing on the transmission. It sounded awful, but this is only a minor shudder and I'm pretty sure its not on the transmission. Weirdly enough, my handbrake grabbed as I was coming to a stop, rather than accelerating (no idea why that would be though....). I will however check it out, thanks for the tip.

Those drips coming out of the bell housing may not be oil but hydraulic fluid. Check your clutch master cylinder level. Your slave cylinder may be leaking. This may cause a feeling of shuddering as it is not releasing smoothly
