After I let my pal know about problem with oil feed through the wiring which he had repaired under warranty he has now found an interesting problem more exciting IMO several times the car has accelerated while under braking. Exciting as he lives in Buxton and going into a downhill bend underbraking you really don't want to speed up. So the question is could oil now be inside the ECU and causing the problem or is there any history of TD5's doing similar? . He should be back off holiday monday hopefully safely. The manual Disco ECU has an anti-shunt feature that makes upward gear changes smoother. It keeps a small amount of throttle on for about half a second when you lift your foot off. On an upward change, you don't notice it, but it does it when you go straight from throttle to brakes as well, and because you are expecting the car to slow down as you lift off, it can feel as if the car is accelerating slightly. It takes a bit of getting used to. However, it's only a small effect, lasting half a second or so, and may be nothing to do with your friend's problem, which sounds much more serious from the way you describe it. May be worth bearing in mind, though.
