Discovery keeps cutting out - V8

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can shed some light on a problem that I've been having this afternoon. Every time that I come to a halt at a roundabout, junction, traffic light, etc., the engine dies. It immediately restarts on the key but tries to idle at about 300rpm for a few seconds (maybe as many as 10) before jumping to the normal idle speed of about 760rpm.

I can't detect any power loss and the fuel consumption doesn't appear out of the ordinary. It does the same thing on both petrol and LPG.

The engine lost some coolant yesterday as I managed to drive from Bristol to High Wycombe with the top off the expansion tank. After it'd been stopped for about 5 minutes I noticed water coming out from underneath, opened the bonnet and found the cap still sitting on top of the fuse box where I'd put it when checking the water before leaving home. It only needed about 1litre to fill it up again and the temp gauge didn't rise above normal during the drive to HW or on the return journey. This information is included in case anyone thinks it's relevant (aside from showing what a pratt I can be).

Any ideas?

Someone else I know had an identical problem today! Same engine, same vehicle, LPG as well. He cured it by switching off the aircon.... Seemed to do the trick.

OP snipped

I did turn the aircon off about 30 mins before the end of my journey (Poole to Bristol) as the fans were working overtime - sounds like a bleedin jet aircraft - but it didn't make any difference. Of course, it may have been so hot under the bonnet that it just needed to cool down to see any effect.

I'll have to see how it goes tomorrow.

At the risk of offending the venerable ladies on the ng (and the PC brigade); there were some very attractive looking she-males on the quayside in Poole today ... long live summer :-))

Haven't got LPG but had a similar problem in the Discovery about Christmas time. Took it to local non-franchise Land Rover garage and they connected to computer. The C02 was slightly high and something else needed sorting if I remember correctly. Drove it out half an hour later, problem cured.

I left the oil cap off when I topped up with oil once, on an Escort I had once and drove about a mile before I could smell the result of leaving it off.

Just remembered what else it was he did(I think). He cleaned the stepper motor up and put it back on.

If that sort of thing offended me, I'd have kicked Bruce out of a moving Land Rover by now:-) as he's always passing comment.

The idle control unit may be starting to stick.

Take it off and wash it with carb cleaner

"When I get home I'm going to rip the wifes knickers off (the elastic's hurting my legs)" type stuff, y'mean?

Nah, Bruce is far too lumberjackish IMO...

Sorry ... she-males is a military term used for females. I am, of course, aware of the normal connotation and being old enough to have sampled the sights (but not tempted with the supposed delights) of Boogey Street in Singapore - before they bulldozed it into oblivion - have seen some pretty damn good looking ones of those too.

I think I've eliminated heat as a cause because I'd only gone about

200m today when it started to do it again.

Hey Ho! Gotta get it fixed by tomorrow afternoon so I can take the grandchildren to the Bristol balloon festival. It's great having grand-kids ... you get to do all the really good things in life all over again :-))

I did wonder ...

Removed the stepper motor and it was pretty gunked up. Gave it a good clean and bunged it back in ... no improvement. I hope it isn't dead 'cos the local dealer quoted me £80 + vat for a new one!

It's going on the diagnostic computer tomorrow morning, so hopefully I'll at least know what's wrong.

20 years of grief bringing up your own thats' needed before you get grand-sproglets.
