or hang a sign on the steering wheel or have the socket non latching on the rear of the vehicle so if you do drive away it just drops out.

best answer yet. Use a german style plug where the cable exits from the middle of it, it'll just pull out. I assume that they were designed like that for this reason, if you pull the wire too hard the plug comes out, thereby increasing safety.
