Hydraulic tappets.

Some one must be a font on knowledge on these. I picked up the heads today for Morph and the conversation turned to hydraulic tappets. I won't pretend to understand them at the moment but could someone talk me through what if anything I need to do prior to rebuilding Morph.

He has had a new valve fitted and the rest reseated and a decoke.

One tappet had a rattle (barely noticable) prior to the strip down. Cam shaft looks fine and didn't cause any concern prior to the stripdown (bearing in mind I was only running on 7 pots I'm happy it's ok.

Of course the offending tappet will be no doubt impossible to locate... it could even have been a side effect ( spit and blowby ) of the holy valve batman.

Replacement tappets are so cheap that you may as well just bite the bullet and replace the lot.

I'd agree.

Not quite a Landrover, but we spent ages some while ago trying, and failing, to trace a duff hydraulic tappet on a CVH Ford Escort head ... In the end we just bought them all and replaced them in about the same time we'd spent trying to find the duff one.

No problem buying them, just wondered more how they work.

Not Landrover but everything is becoming clear....

I've seen shims listed on parts lists...whats that all about if they adjust themselves or am I getting mixed up with different engines?

You're getting mixed up on different engines - the shims MAY be used on a OHC engine depending on how it is designed.

just had a thought ( annual event ) Peggy was a bit tappety on one but it went away after I cleared the oilways of accumulated sludge and stuff. it was just poor oil feed that caused it mark the shafts carefully when you remove them front which side and top or you wont get any feed at all Derek
