Er, no, its 80w90. It will be 80 when cold, then as it warms up, it turns into 90. Most probably, it will be OK for use in place of 90. Alan.

No. It's 80W90 not EP90

EP is an additive and stands for Extreme Pressure. If it doesn't say EP then it isn't EP. It may have another additive which is just as good or better though.

Unless your gearbox needs the EP additive then you can use 80W90 in a vehicle which needs 80 weight oil in winter and 90 weight oil in summer.

It could be red wine. Although a few years ago ISTR they were fairly interchangeable. Or was that antifreeze?

It's what some garages etc etc are pushing as a supposed "replacement" for EP90. It's just a more expensive Multigrade. LR transmissions desigend for EP90 are more than happy with it, so why use multigrade?

A motor factor sold me some a while back, spun me a yarn about EP90 being phased out, and this being the replacement. A day later I popped into another place which were perfectly happy to sell me proper EP90 at 2/3 the cost, and also informed me that it was still in supply. I took the 80w90 back to the first place and demanded a refund, (as they had lied to me). I got the refund, and I havn't been back to that place since.

axles and transfer boxes do, however, all of 'em IIRC.

in particular, the 5-speed boxes, LT77(S) and R380 run in theory on Dexron-II ATF, though any ATF seems to work in 'em, and I've also seen 'em run OK on SAE75 synthetic gear oil. 80W90 or EP90 would be too heavy for these, I think.

All 90/110 gearboxes (four or five speed) have oil pumps that will break if asked to pump EP90 on a cold morning. I don't know about SAE75 synthetic gear oil, but sounds a bit thick to me. Depending on which box, the recommended oils are either engine oil or ATF. Apart from the problem with the oil pump, the service is not particularly demanding except for the synchromesh, and apparently it is to get this to work optimally that they made several changes to the type of oil. According to the manual (1991 110 200tdi), EP90 for the transfer box oil, as well as the diffs and swivel pin housings. ATF for the main box (LT77)

Get an oil syringe to make life a lot easier. Failing that, you can improvise with an old squeezy bottle, such as washing-up liquid bottle, but make sure you get all the detergent out first :)

The first time I did it, I used a squeezy bottle. Then I went and bought an oil syringe very quickly afterwards.
