Jacking a defender: diff box or middle of the axle?

All,

The workshop manual says that a defender should be jacked by its diff boxes, stating to be careful because these are not centred. Indeed, when I do that, I can't seem to be able to lift the opposite wheel without having to lift the whole thing insanely high, far too high to be safe (and I actually didn't try because of the angle the axle was showing with the jack).

Is it ok to jack using the middle of the axle?

TIA,

Fred

I jack, via a wooden block, the end of the axle I want lifted, never had any problems, I suppose you could jack the middle to get both wheels up if you needed thus, but that'd be putting more weight on the jacking point than I've done with my method.

Regards. Mark.

I jack up using the holes in the front or rear ad then use axle stands. So you can lift the whole car if you want to regards Fred
