LT95 with wrong oil

I have just opened up my spare LT95 gearbox to check the innards as its been standing for 4 years. The one in the Hybrid is getting a bit clunky, hard to engage gears and jumping out of low ratio when in reverse so replacement is now due. The good news is the spare looks pristine inside. I was worried that although I bought it from a trusted breaker who had driven the Range Rover it came out of and said it was in good condition that in the 4 years it has stood in my workshop the insides may have rusted. The bad new is this box is supposed to be filled with 20/50 engine oil or ATF but EP90 came out :-(

Any experts here who know if the EP90 will have damaged anything, the pump perhaps?

I'm guessing a bit but I reckon it will depend how, and how long for, it's been driven like that, also what condition it was in when the oil was put in.

(No claims to be an expert, but I have rebuilt one.)

I don't believe that ATF has ever been suggested for this 'box. Don't!

This 'box is pretty bombproof and I wouldn't expect any long term issues following the use of EP90. But engine oil is the recommendation. Drain and refill.

I wouldn't expect the pump gears to have come to harm either from contact with EP90 or the higher pressures that may have been generated when cold.

Silicone rubber seals don't like the additives in EP90 etc.. This 'box didn't, I believe, have silicone rubber seals when built by Land Rover.

Whilst we're on the subject, what oil should i have in my LT77, and the Borg Warner Xfer it's coupled to?

ATF or MT75 synth in the LT77; MT75 will make it a touch heavier shifting when it's cold.

I think the BW runs on EP80/90, but you'd best check.

Alex Hi,

LR used to recommend ATF Dexron II for both the LT77 and the Borg Warner transfer box.

When the R380 gbox was introduced they continued recommending ATF Dexron II until they changed to MTF94 as Austin has already quoted. AFAIK they continued recommending ATF for the BW tbox though.

But what we have found out here in Greece (where the climate is pretty hotter than in the UK and stress on gearoils is more) is that Dexron 3 or 4 is even better on all occasions and applications.

If you feel rich and willing to spend a bit more on your gearoils I would also suggest you use REDLINE D4 on both units (LT77/R380 and Borg Warner tbox). You will definately be able to judge by yourself that this oil make things operate much quiter and with less friction.

Hope this helps

Take care Pantelis

LR originally (1989 model year) recommended EP90 etc. for the BW 'box but, thereafter, have only mentioned ATFs.

So what is the difference between ATF (D2) and MTF94? in fact, WTF is MTF94?

Ah cost is a consideration. In fact if it would work on cooking oil i'd use it

Ok. so MTF94 is a fancy alternative to standard 75w80 gear oil to API-GL4. So the box will run on anything from ATF through to 80w oil. Just not EP oils
