MTF gearbox oil - does it actually exist?!

I been slowly trying to renew all the fluids in the P38. Engine oil was fine, except there was so much of it - nearly 10 litres in the diesel. Filter a positive joy to change.

Went to check the gearbox oil level. First remove tray under the gearbox (that bugger's staying off!) and then find that the level plug needs a torx 55. I've only just moved over to Metric from Whitworth!

Anyway, the manual says to use MTF 94? I went to Hal-frauds after work and i just dont trust the little plastic folders they have telling you what bit / oil / chrome accessory you need. I know not too much about oil. I'm guessing that if ATF is auto trans fluid, then MTF is Manual Transmission fluid??

Does this mean that I am going to and buy it from the dealer?

Any answers please?

Hi Dave,

So far as I know, you use ATF in an R380, cos it needs to be slightly thinner to get pumped up to 5th

At least I used ATF in mine cos thats what the manual says

And then Landrover changed the spec to MTF94 ...... a good motor factor should be able to get you some...or main stealer...or one of the specialists....as gear oil goes it aint cheap though

Ah, thought as much. Cheers.

Unfortunately the only motor factors we have here has closed. Halfords is now the only place to get stuff really. Luckily(?) theres a LR dealer a couple of miles up the road. I'll go there on my next day off. I found that they were pretty reasonable for engine oil. About 40 odd quid for 10 litres of the 5w/30 stuff thats like piss. Genuine Land Rover stuff was =A330 a gallon though, eek!

MTF 94 is what you should use.

Go to a proper motor factors or oil supplier (Halfords are only any good for billy-bolt-on s**te)

You can buy it in 1litre or 5 litre from your LR main dealer.

Unipart factors should have it, the main problem with draining a landy is no so much the quantity in the sump but more the amount up your sleeve and on the drive afterwards. Derek
