new exhaust, diy or pain in the ****

Well my land rover now sounds more butch which can mean only one thing... it's time for a new exhaust. The whole thing is looking near the end of it's working life and the rear section has just parted company with themid section at the join with the silencer. So, going for a full replacement of a mild steel one, questions are.. Is this a royal pain in the arse I should take to someone else or is it a fair DIY job? Remembering I work at the roadside, no workshop here.

I did the V8 about a ear ago, as long as you have an exhaust that will fit, new u-bolts, rubber mounts and mount bolts, it'll be fine :0)

It depends on how keen you are to save money, I did my Disco in the carpark at the back of the house, cost £110 for full system, local rip you off kwick fit £210, usually the hardest part I removing the old one, just cut it off and it should be a simple job, plenty of assembly paste round the joints is always useful.

Piece of proverbial with one caveat. If you're replacing it from the manifold there's a reasonable chance the nuts are siezed and you'll break a stud off - if you haven't got a blowtorch to heat them up first I'd suggest leaving it to a suitably equipped individual. And if you do break one off it's easiest to remove the manifold and replace all the studs at once.

You're welcome to do the job in my workshop with my gear, but there's a slight matter of 12,000 intervening miles. :-)

As I have a few jobs that need doing (exhaust, new springs shocks and bushes all round, new injectors, recon injector pump, replace both outer bearings in rear axle), I've had a word with a land rover guy about 10 miles away, he'll do the lot for a comple of hundred plus parts. Alot of that I could do myself but I just don't have the time at the moment.

On or around Wed, 02 Feb 2005 12:21:38 +0000, Mr.Nice. enlightened us thusly:

Just finished that job on mine, with the rear dampers. springs were done a while back, front dampers for last MOT (same time as new turrets). Bushes all seem OK.

I was supposed to be swapping the steering shaft lower UJ, but paddock's sent me the wrong one. They sent what I ordered, based on their list, but their list is wrong. Apparently the part is listed as an upper UJ, but it don;t look much like that either - the joint looks similar, but the discos at least have a rubber (presumably shock-absorbing) coupling in the shaft which *appears* to be part of the joint. The joint they sent was NRC7387 (or equivalent), apparently the correct number is NRC7704. Which they're going to send me when I send the wrong one back. I suggested that they get their web-molisher to fix the error in the list... they were suitably apologetic :-)
