Oil on clutch pedal

Hi all

The clutch on my 300tdi 90 works perfectly ok but I have recently noticed a very small amount of oil seeping down the shank of the clutch pedal

Where should I start looking or what should I start worrying about ?!

Have you checked Hydraulic levels in your clutch cylinder ??

Master cylinder leaking, check fluid level. You will need to replace the whole thing as they are usually badly scored in the bore and you may be wasting your time just changing the seals. It's less downtime anyway to replace the whole master cylinder, also better than finding out you need one when you dismantle the old one. New cylinder is only about £30 (genuine part).

This happened to my 90. The clutch master cylinder seals were on the way out & failed about 2 months after I first noticed the oil on the pedal. It was a slow failure, not a catastrophic failure - the clutch became more difficult to disengage and you needed to pump the pedal to release it when engaging first gear from stationary, for example. I replaced both the master & slave to prevent future hassle.

Everyone else is wrong. Its the bottle of 3 in 1 oil on the dashboard, its fell over as its about six weeks since the spongie that you use to demist the windscreen has been used and so it no longer wedges the 3 in 1 oil in place.

In my experience if you change the master you may as well change the slave at the same time, if you don't it will soon go anyway!

Convert it to an auto box, then it won't need a clutch pedal :-)
