not with most starter motors - only the permanent magnet type motors go backwards. Starters are the other sort (series wound, maybe?) where the electromagnets are in both the armature and the casing.
Definitely can with all my ancient examples, may be a problem with a modern ecu controlled one.

Incedentally can one push start a diesel ?
If you push start your engine or use the starting handle, then you can charge the battery back up

anything with a solenoid fuel shut-off will not work with a dead-flat battery... 'course, really old ones have a knob to pull to shut 'em off, linked by cable to the pump.
