Your looking at it the wrong way. Does east point west too?
I had me one of them as a Kid. Only worked it out after I took it back.

Or perhaps you're the first to notice that the earth's magnetic poles have flipped ...
Yeah but if you already know what direction South is, why do you need a compass ?
Well, that earthquake was pretty big.... TonyB
Hugh, Sorry to disillusion you, but if it's a vehicle compass that's exactly what it's supposed to do when mounted in the vehicle. When you're driving South that's the way you're heading and that's what it tells you; and North, of course, is behind you. You can't knock Land Rover off it's pedestal that easily! Reg,

Maybe it's designed to be used only in the southern hemisphere????? Badger.
They make them for us here in the southern hemishpere - Silva must have dropped it in the wrong parcel in the factory..... It should work OK if you hold it backwards.
(Actually if you want a bit of trivia, they do actually make southern hemisphere compasses, the earth's field lines are not exactly horizontal with respect to the earths surface, they dip down a little in the northern hemisphere towards the north pole. The manufacturer has to balance the needle or card by having it very slightly heavier on the south end, so it lies flat and will spin on the pivot OK. In the mighty southern hemisphere the field lines dip towards the south pole and compass manufacturers have to weight the opposite (north) end of the needle for it to work OK. So if you take a northern hemisphere compass to the southern hemisphere the needle is weighted on the wrong end and will jam up unless you hold it at a tilt. As I found out when I brought my expensive and now useless compass with me to live downunder. Mind you that was a Silva one too so it might have just been crap.....)
Yes - muggins here bought a northern-hemisphere compass and then went to do geological fieldwork in New Zealand. It's amazing the difference it made. The needle was only balanced if I held the compass at about 35deg from the horizontal, which made it tricky to measure bedding planes accurately.

Actually I did notice it did dip slightly to one end - I just thought it was even more crap.

To prove to my "navigator" i.e. SWMBO that Ordnance Survey do not print their maps upside down and the fact that whereas left was east a 15 mins ago it may not necessarily still be east now.

No Land Rover have just struck back. I have 2 x driving lamps hanging from A frame complete with LR decals. Just dismantled one to replace bulb and on reassembling discover that no matter which way I arrange them one of the decals will always be upside down! Now that's a real tea-break job.
Are you sure that's not so one of the decals is still legible if you roll the vehicle over?
