Rear prop vibration SWB S3

I have just had the rear prop off and changed the UJ. before removing the prop I had very little vibration from it , it was just a case of the UJ at the rear being worn ,so I changed them both. I made sure everything went back the same as it came off ,but now I seem to have quite a bit of vibration from about 28 to 35 mph over this speed or under it no vibration at all. Any idea's on how to solve this vibration other buying a new prop. I did read somewhere on the www about strapping a jubilee clip around the prop to try and balance it where the original weights are. Still can't work out why its now worse with nice new UJ as opposed to the old ones.

Did you split the shaft at the splines? Did you maintain the original orientation between the universal joints?

No, I kept the shaft in one piece, I think I kept the original orientation of the UJ but now I think of it, I may well have messed this up by 180 degrees. I wonder if its just because the old UJ was so worn that the shock of new ones now exaggerates how out of balance the prop was.

There should be alignment marks on the prop at the joint. It's easy to be 180 degrees out.

If you can't bottom the problem, find yourself a propshaft reconditioning place and ask them to balance it for you. Quick and easy.

I didn't split the prop in half so it can't be that, it could well be either ends of the prop, the bit that screws to the diff and the bit that screws to the gear box, I may well have rotated them by 180 degrees. Oh well ,time to see if I can find someone in Norfolk to balance the shaft for me. Probably stand more chance finding a mountain to ski down in Norfolk :o)

I had a mare doing the props on the 101 and it took me two sets of UJs before I got it right. First set one of the rollers managed to come adrift in fitting. This was evident on inspection as the movement wasn't loose or free as the joint was worked by hand. I'd check the movement by hand and satisfy yourself the bearings aren't being compromised.

All the movement of the new UJ's seems nice and smooth, I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and purchase a new prop, hopefully this will sort it out, seems it costs more to get the old one re-balanced than it is to buy a new one.
