Rear View Mirror

Hi,

Strange one this .. Just bought a P reg Discovery Tdi, 3 door manual, no electrics etc to go wrong one owner, 55k on the clock full service history, brand new Alloys and tyres, £7k .. bargain I think .. ;)

Anyway, the rear view mirror is wide and thin, which isn't too much of a problem normally, but we tow a variety of trailers, and many of them can't be seen _at all_ except when we turn corners, which really makes it difficult to reverse. Does anyone lknow if there is a Landrover replacement mirror or 'gizmo' that will help this ?

Cheers,

Bad form, I know, to reply to my own post .. but I've just read it again and it sounds like I have no clue at all .. What I really want is ideas of things Landrover Discovery drivers use and have found genuinely useful for reversing trailers. I've seen the stick on 'louvre' type things and add-on rear tailgate mirrors .. I would value the opinions of anyone who's used such devices before, and would appreciate a recommendation for something that 'works' rather than something that looks like it might work ... ;)

The only thing that can be done is to attach circular all round vision type mirror thingys onto the door mirrors. The rear view mirror is such that it picks up everything you are going to be able to see through the rear door glass, which isn't much! Use big trailers - it's all too easy to completely forget you are towing anything when towing a small trailer that has disappeared in the mirrors!

You could try a freznol lens (Flat plastic thingy)attached to the rear window, I use it for reversing.

You could always pop down to Maplins ..the electrical people and buy a camera and mini monitor.Mount the camera in a rainproof light housing onto the roof of the Disco then you have a brilliant view. Also if you mount it in the above said item it looks to anybody who does not know just like a rear mounted light. If i remember rightly they are about £70-80. Just an alternative suggestion.......

fit it in a suitable housing with a little tracking motor and a joystick, and you'll be able to look around corners...

My thoughts on reversing big trailers:

always attempt to reverse around a right-hand corner, so you can see the trailer over your right shoulder/out the side window. If you have to reverse around a left hand corner, and you've a blind sided vehicle (not a problem with a disco, unless it's a commercial) then you really need a helper, or lots of practice. some discos have remote-adjust on the passenger door mirror, which is a godsend. If you need still more movement, click the passenger side mirror out to the other position, so it'll look sideways.

but most important of all, practice with an unloaded flatbed trailer first, in a big open space.

Dead simple but effective - I have two bamboo canes sticking up vertically at the front and rear of the trailer so I can see what it's doing when reversing. For normal driving I usually remove the front one and the rear one reminds me the trailer is there and where the back of it is ;-)

Not as flash as a cameral and monitor though :-))

Heheheh, that's the trouble - bid trailers are easy, but we have a couple of smaller 'household' and motorbike trailers that can't be seen unless there are bikes on them .. :) How cool and trick would a joystick be for a reversing TV system .. ;) It's generating a few ideas and prices aren't too stupid to rule anything out. For the use we'd make of it I reckon we would spend a fair bit to make it easier .. ;)
