Replacing oil seal on back the back of the swivel housing.

How do you replace the oil seal on the bacl of the swivel housing???

I cannont get it over the chrome ball, and i do not have a socket / spanner for the bolts that hold the chrome ball to the axle?

Where can i get one from? It sort of resembles the locking wheel nut from my car..........

If your refering to the swivel seal then cut it with a stanley knife and fit it so that the cut it at the top... put a tiny bit of silicon sealant onto the seal where it's been cut when refitting and jobs a goodun.

Good call....

You probably do. It's just a normal spanner you're meant to use, 14mm or thereabouts. Ring end, of course!

You just need to make sure you're using a twelve-point ring spanner, not six-point or flank drive.

Just to let you all know.....

THE JOB IS A BASTARD!!!!!!!!!!

Especially when the bolts holding the chrome ball on are covered in mud/clay/general s**te.

Broke 2 Halfords spanners, (they will be going back..........) Snapped 2 heads of the bolts.

Joy.

I think i am going to add bolt snapper to my CV..........................

You may try turning the old seal through 180 degrees??

Sometimes works..... sometimes doesn't.

I've just rebuilt a RR swivel and baulked at the swivel to axle bolts - turned the seal through 180 degrees and it's OK so far, previously it's failed to work twice on Series LR but has worked four or five times - trick seems to be cleaning the oil seal clamp ring off thoroughly before refitting Graeme

You don't need to strip the hub at all .

Just disconnect the drag link and track rod. Disconnect the brakes or hang the calliper out of the way.

Then undo the ring of bolts holding the chrome ball to the axle.

You can then pull the whole swivel housing off in one piece including the halfshaft.

Remove the oil over the half shaft and refit the new one.

It is a bit heavy but much quicker.
