ROT 3G phones

Sorry, "rule of Tim" question !

Is "3G" a real international standard ? Will one 3G phone work everywhere ?

Time to upgrade and I am thoroughly confused with the choices.

Probably not right away I've seen at least a number that are Dual band IIRC to work in the US as well they need to be Tri-band not that it really worries me all I would like to see in a phone related way is that plank acting like Ted Rogers getting a beating for the annoying commercials. There are maps of coverage at

As far as I know, there's more than a couple of 3G standards, not all compatibe with each other and I don't know which is operated where. UMTS is what we use in Europe and I think it's a popular standard worldwide, but don't quote me on that.

Anyway, the real answer is that all 3G phones that I'm aware of, have 2G capabilities as well, in case there's no 3G coverage in the area. The question is where you want to operate your mobile and for what purpose. If you want to make calls from Europe, practically any 3G phone will do the job, as they can switch to 2G if necessary. That doesn't apply for the States (and I think the Americas in general), as 2G operates in different frequencies there and I don't know about their 3G networks. I don't know what 3G is like in Asia, I think their 2G networks are largely compatible with ours.

You'll probably need a tri- or a quad-band phone in order to be covered for most cases. If your needs are more specific than "need the phone to work absolutely everywhere", you're more likely to find a solution that suits your needs well enough.

I need it to work in South Korea, they use some variant of CDMA like the Americans, but I am not sure about their 3G stuff at all.

I don't have an answer for that but my guess is that you're probably more likely to find a UK-compatible phone in Korea rather than the opposite.

3G GSM is NOT compatible with CDMA (in any way, shape or form, 3G or otherwise). We have both systems here in NZ and the lack of compatibility is a right nuisance.
