I suspect it's more likely to be your phone doesn't support HSDPA myself.
I have a K800i which I use with my Thinkpad as a Bluetooth modem and only get 3G, however, I have a Mobile Broadband dongle for my Eee which gives speeds rivalling my home broadband (3.6Mbps)
