I've got a 1975 S3 with whine and rumble on 1st thru 3rd, silent on
4th. Am I right in assuming the layshaft bearings have gone?TIA

depends on how much whine, though. Rumble sounds iffy, whine is normal unless seriously loud.
Oh, the whine is loud alright. Sounds like a badly worn diff only about twice as loud.

Indeed I was tempted to post the standard retort "they all do that sir" at least mine does, whines all the time, and when it gets really stroppy jumps out of second. I think it has to get seriosly bad before its worth tinkering with unless you have nothing better to do or oodles to spend on it, which I don't have at the moment :(

mine jumps out of first quite easily and third sometimes, both on over-run. Almost certainly detent springs, I might even look into fixing it one day.
