Snorkel

hi Group,

Could somebody please explain how a snorkel fits on a 2250cc petrol series landrover?

What I don't really understand is where does the air filter come into this, I have a K&N oil bath replacement on my machine, can I remove this, fit some drain pipes and elbows, then reattach the K & N at the top, or is it not that simple?

Does these snorkel tops that are advertised for circa. £25 have a built in filter?

Many Thanks

I built and fitted a snorkel to my 110 2.5 N/A D last year using parts from that well know snorkel equipment specialist B&Q, I lewft my oil bath in the system where it was, and used all the different types of drainpipe joints you can get but still found I had to resort to buying some flexible hose from a mate. It was pretty easy and lasted well, until my engine blew its head gasket! 3 Weeks later, but that could have been due to the fact that my raditor got caked in mud due to all the wading I started doing in muddy bombholes!

On my 110TD5 I have a mantec snorkel which I bullied the dealer into fitting as I wasn't too bothered about mud flaps and mats ;-), its much better, looks better, feels better and I'm confident I'm not going to break it quite so easily, the top is similar to the type you can buy for £25 quid 'ish in fact they are based upon those sort of tops. The filter is simply a cyclonic effect created by a couple of extra vents near the top creating a cyclone that expels dust and water (rain that is not lakes of the stuff) back out the top again, I would say they are worth the money!

Fitting your own snorkel is ok but you end up making a bodge job usually out of something that people sell perfectly good kits to do. You will also have to inform your insurers about the modification and its surprising how unco-operative they can become when you start telling them you have a home made raised air intake (I know!). Spoil yourself visit someplace like

for a good solid cheap snorkel and save yourself a lot of hassle!

Thanks Mark,

Although, now I have seen that site, not going to order a raised intake, but

2 x diff guards and a steering guard, will snorkel after christmas now, I figure I will smash the diffs before I go wading, but then again, sods laws gonna kick in somewhere!

Hmm... Diff Smashing is quite had to achieve but possible, I dented my back casing whilst reversing two weeks ago in Cumbria. However in the Winter, I think I'd value a snorkel over some mud anchors!
