Starting

Quick question about starting from cold after allowing time for the heater plugs to do their worst.

My old 200Tdi 110 starts like this err err vroom

The 300Tdi Disco I'm about to buy goes err err err err err err err err and I pause and think oh dear, then err err err err err err err vroom

I'm being told something about electrical pumps by the vendor and that this is normal. Is this right?

Sounds about normal for an engine with worn rings!

My 300Tdi, when the starter motor isn't playing up, goes err vroom. Could just be glow-plugs, could be a new pump, could be a new engine. There's an awful lot of other ones out there...

I had that problem about a month ago. I thought it was a flat battery but it turned out to be worn out glow plugs. Replaced them and starts a treat now.

To coin a phrase, err thanks.

I'll remember all these words, plus to say "worn rings?" querulously when I call in tomorrow. It's from a reputable, I think, dealer, and otherwise seems to be what I want. Starts OK when warm, and no untoward smoke or anything.

My 200Tdi was doing exactley as you described...bloody air leak in the fuel line ( 3 to be exact)..had to invent a way to presurise the line in order to find them...never had any fuel loss but allowed loads of air into the system.... So it was err err err err err err err ...pause (get some fuel into the pump) err err err err vroom.

just a thought ( it was the chaps on here that pointed me in the right direction..for witch I am eternely grateful)

I've got a 300Tdi fitted into a Classic Range Rover. It starts after about 3 turns, in cold weather and the glowplugs aren't wired up yet.

I have that T shirt too! :-) Mine was the Rangie Classic type with the picture of the fuel oulet pipe on the tank.

Tricky bugger that was to find!

could be glowplugs, but a good TDi of either sort should start without except when it's very cold.

The 300 TDi here generally started up like your 200 does. If it turns over more than about 4 compressions, there's summat up with it... although glow plugs are a relatively simple/easy fix.

300s can have iffy head gaskets, too.

The only "electric pump" on a TDi is the late autos which have EDC. However, I don't see that making it slow to start. The transit engines I've had with EDC start instantly with no glowplugs, they don't even have glow plugs fitted.

Errm, well it's a '97 auto TDi, which I suppose might qualify as 'late' (I'll leave others to make jokes about the alternative meaning of late) and the more I think about it the words he used were electronic pump.

All I really wanted to know was should it start fairly instantly or if something might be broken. As the saying goes, "My cup runneth over...".

I've got a 200Tdi and one of the young 'uns has a 300 Tdi and they both start instantly, as soon as you turn the key. His has done 105k and mine's done nearly 300k and they've never had a problem starting. I think he's pulling the wool over your eyes, there's got to be something wrong with it. As far as he says it has an electric pump it could have had an engine conversion from petrol and the pump left in the tank. It may have the rotten steel pipe above the tank unit drawing air in?

It's quite possible that it's an EDC pump. However, it still should start reasonably quickly. If it's not smoking and the coolant an oils look OK, then I'd suspect glowplugs.

Well, I called in today to drop off the adjustable towing bracket to be teased into place, and this was one of the jobs on my list that they say has been sorted. It was an air leak in the fuel line, but they still maintain that I shouldn't expect it to start as quickly as my 200tdi.

We didn't try starting; that excitement will have to wait now till I pick it up next week. I'll only pop up again if the problem hasn't disappeared. Thanks again to all for all the marvellous info.
