Super Safeway!

Dec 29, 2003 36 Replies

Popped into our local Safeway to get some bits and bobs when a mate who works there dragged me over to a quiet, tucked away corner of 'special offers'...

I eventually walked away with:

6 bottles of Wray & Nephew overproof rum = 5 quid each
2 Magnum of Moet & Chandon = 22.99 each
1 Magnum Piper Heidsiek = 14.99
36 tins of Guinness 'Draught' = 13.98 a bottle of Gosset Grand Reserve = 14.99
2 bottles of Eristoff Black = 2.99 each

plus various other foodie type stuff...

But the BEST part, having spent 154 odd quid was the voucher for 20p off per L of fuel!

Grumble is about to get a top-up of unleaded with another whacking 20 quid off the 100L odd spare tank capacity...

What a Happy New Year we're going to be having! :-)

Martyn

Sounds like the party is at your house then!

It's exactly the New Year freebie I was hoping for - as Grumble has about 100L spare capacity in the 180L petrol tank (as I posted above). I've long sinse known of the 100L cut-off, having a 180L tank. Most forecourt cashiers will look around for a 'hidden candid-camera' when you go back for a refill (especially when you've also just put 100L of LPG in too)... :-)

I got a Christmas Card from the Manager at the BP station around the corner this year (honestly), and he keeps asking how long it'll take to get my GS on the road...

My mate had a Jag with the twin tanks we used to pull up in the middle of the rows of pumps fill both tanks and walk in and say " number 3 and number 12" the number of times we got the reply "but there's only one car which pump is it?"

Andy

I've had a few bemused looks when I've been filling up the lightweight...

This is another annoyance to me... Why doesn't the fecking latch work on almost all pump nozzles these days?

Martyn

I presume it's a safety thing - they think somebody will end up pumping hundreds of gallons of unleaded all over the forecourt. It's usually the metal bar thing they take out. I once came across a loose one and took it with me, so I could use it in other pumps. Fine for a while but eventually I lost it.

Many other countries I've been to (USA, New Zealand) leave the latches intact. It's annoying, isn't it?

David

The annoying thing is the pumps cut out when the fuel reaches the nozzle end so it can only be so if either someone deliberately sets it going on the floor ( in which case 100l is still a lot) or they're afraid someone will run off without paying for

2 or 3 hundred litres

Local garage did it on the diesel pump put aside for HGV's It's bad enough having to stand holding the trigger for 50 litres now try 350 litres or more (they had disabled the 100l max)

Andy

Bruce sent me out the other day to put petrol in our lightweight. I spent

10 minutes looking for the stupid petrol cap. I had to phone him in the end.

For future reference, where is it?

I'm surprised you don't get nutters doing that anyway. A bit of gaffa tape around the handle and you could wander off down the road; in the general melee of most service stations I expect you'd have a good few gallons knocking about before anybody realised and hit the cutoff.

Don't try this at home, kids.

David

We used to run an ex-Army S2, and I'm not sure anyone on the farm realised there was a tank under the _other_ seat.

One tank under each seat, and you have to take the seat cushion and the panel off to reveal the filler cap. There's a tube which pulls up. On the front of the seatbox, near the handbrake, is a lever-tap which switches supply from one tank to the other, and also switches the fuel gauge.

Tanks are both standard SWB size, about 10 gallons.

Take note if you're considering an LPG conversion.

Nikki - if you want really funny looks sit in the seat with the nozzle between your knees while you fill...

a 50p piece wedged in the handle works wonders - especially when you're filling a 500 litre tank

Although the 90 takes no way near the levels are you are talking about, I always found that the auto cut off when the fuel reached the nozzle could be overcome when the filler was drained down after releasing the handle.

Don't make me laugh whilst I'm drinking red wine. I've spat it all over the keyboard.

Same fun here, petrol filler under seat, & lpg at the side of the door, found out you can confuse a few people very easily!!
