SWB 90 2.5TD- Dodgy Electrics

hello All, first posting here so hopefully I won't make any clamatous errors and get flamed to death.

Im on the prowl for ideas really. For some reason my 1989 90 has developed 2 odd faults.

Firstly when I turn off the ignition the engine keeps running. Know I know why the previous owner fitted a kill switch to the fuel pump solenoid. This seems to stay live even when the key is removed. I have tried fitting a new ignition switch but this has not helped. I have a feeling it may be to do with the starter relay itself or the wiring to the started reley. Has anyone ever had a similar problem, if so how did you resolve it. Also does anyone know whether needing the kill switch to stop the engine constitutes a failure as far as the MOT is concerned.

Secondly, deffo MOT failure this, I seem to have a cross connection between my right indicator and my sidelights. When I turn on my right indicator my sidelights (both sides) flash too; and when I turn on the sidelights the right indicators, front, side and back come on permanetly. I've tried tracing cables but I cant figure this one. Where are the key earth points for these circuits, could a duff relay cause this? Anyone got a good fault finding sequence I can try.

heyyylllpppp! Failing any advice does anyone know a good auto electrician specialising in Landys near Staines Middx

TIA, Paul

Sounds nastily bodged. My only experience with diesels is with the

300TDi, this has a stop solenoid in the engine bay that unblocks the fuel line when the ignition is turned on, and the fuel pump also gets powered up at the same time. When the ignition is cut, the stop solenoid blocks the fuel line and the pump turns off. Sounds like someone had problems with yours and bodged it.

This sounds like a dodgy earth. A bulb is a piece of wire that is connected between live and earth, if you have no earth connection then the current through a lamp finds a working earth by passing through the other bulbs, which causes them to light, normally a little dimly. What happens is that lamps that operate independently from each other will have independent live connections, but those physically close to each other will have their earth connectors connected together. Then this is connected to the chassis. It's this chassis connection that rots and causes symptoms like you describe as the current flows through the other lamps to try and find a return path.

Hunt for the chassis connections used by those lamps, undo them, clean them, and try again.

Good luck with it all!

Don't know about the MOT (though I don't recall anything about turing the engine off at all!). Has someone fitted a radio at some stage? I'm asking as your stop solenoid has got a permenent feed so perhaps someones though "oh I'll stick that wire on there" type of thing.

Almost certainly a bad earth, follow the other repliers advice. Quite likey someone has mixed up earth and 12V somewhere forgetting a common earth mixed up with 12V doesn't always give the desired effect.

how do you do?

welcome, come on in and pull up a comfy chair. I'd put the kettle on but someone borrowed it to fill their washer.

No idea on your diesel issue - I had a large-ish (3.5Ton?) van out on rental that wouldn't die. Chap at the yard said to stall it - mentioned something about valve-lifters I think.

As for the electrics, like Ian said - I'd bet a pound to a penny that fixing a decent earth connection will solve it.
