td4 freelander starting problems

No problems here on '01 TD4 with 73k miles on clock. Just normal servicing and parts you would expect to wear out (discs, wipers etc).

Used to have a Td4, regularly failed to start. Just completely dead. Lights came on dash when I turned on the ignition, but it just would not do anything more. Usually happened after it had been stopped for a short while. If I left it for 30mins and then tried again it would always start. LR dealer could not find a problem, neither could LR Rescue guys. This was just one of the many, many, many faults with the vehicle I had which resulted in the dealer buying it back from me and giving me compensation!

I had a Vauxhall which was just the same as that, and for 3 years running it also did the same thing almost immediately after the annual main dealer service. They changed the ECU thingy 'free of charge' in the end but that didn't make any difference either ...... it did it again shortly afterwards.

Our TD4 needed a new camshaft sensor at 52.5K. Same symptoms as everyone else. Cold starts were fine. Warm starts (i.e. vehicle had been stood still upto 30 mins) not a chance!

Took it to a non-LR garage (to my cost). He diagnosed it (with his non-LR computer) as a immobiliser fault. Disengaged the ECU and killed the car!!! Had to be recovered to an LR dealer. Cost me £584 for a £50 part!!! The non-LR dealer probably cost me nearly £500 of this! Needless to say, all servicing etc is now done at said dealer! You live and learn.

According to the LR dealer (Stratstone, Middleton-On-The-Wolds, East Yorks), a failed cam sensor is pretty common.
