Tinting windows

Anybody tried it?

My new (old )Disco is Jet black and i think it would look a ickle bit better with a very light smoke tint to the windows, the back i would probably want a little darker as my tools will be in the back.

So has anyone done it or had it done? What tint level did you go for or would you recommend? What tips would you give to someone DIY them and any perticuler suppliers to use or not use.

If anyone knows of any places in Birmingham or W'mids that do them please let me know.

all thoughts welcome

Mark

I tinted the windows in my 2A's hardtop. I took them out to do them.

It was bloody hard work trying to do it nicely, and this was with flat panes of glass off the vehicle. I ended up with a resonable finish. It only has a few dog hairs in!, and lots of little bubbles that arn't too obvious. It took hours though! I used the darkest film i could get hold of. It worked really well, keeping the back nice and cool and making it harder to see in.

If i was going to tint something other than a series landy, then i would get someone else to do it, and not even consider doing it myself!

hope that gives you some ideas!.

Yup been there , done it , next time will get some one else to do it.....

Incidentally took my Mirror tint off my Custom VW Beetle after a while ....took bloody ages with a paint scraper...and then I was banging my head against the closed window for the next month as my Brain said "The winow is open cos it's clear"

My brother does the vinyl sign writing that you see on vans etc. One of the other things he does is put tints onto glass panels/car windows. He lives in Kent so I can't send you to him, but it would be worth trying someone similar in your area.

Somebody used to hang out in this NG who did it. ISTR it was about £200 for a Disco sized vehicle. IASTR that it's very easy to set yourself up as a windscreen tinting specialist and charge a lot of money to do a lousy job, so best stick to personal recommendation, or relatives of somebody in this NG :)

Be careful, as I was advised, during a routine weighbridge check at Holyhead in my 130, that there is a legal limit for the darkness of tint you can use - 30%, and many are waaaaaay darker than that (mine aren't!).

Quite correct, there is a limit on the amount of absorption provided b the tint _and_ it's different for the windscreen compared to other windows. IMSMC the amount of absorption allowed by the windscreen is just 17%.

Manchester police were having a roadside crack-down on this about 4-6 weeks ago and were preventing people from completing their journeys until the tint had been removed/reduced to legal levels. It made the national press for a couple of days.

Very true. Let me know if anyone in the Kent and surrounding counties wants a van sign writing or their windows tinted. My brother Tom must be pretty good at what he does as he's got a contract to do some graphics for Securicor and its the second lots of vans he's done for them I believe.

I assume the back windows don't count? My 110 has heavy tint in the back, but lighter on the front doors and none on the windscreen itself.

It sailed through its MOT recently, so I assume it's legal - is it an MOT issue, or should I be worrying?

there was some spray-on tint stuff I saw once, no idea if it was any good.

I _think_ there's a limit to the amount of light absorption for each window (or maybe area of the vehicle). As to whether it's an MOT issue I don't know but I doubt that an MOT station has the equipment to check it anyway.

Was that the one where the patrol car also proved to have illegally dark windows?

AIUI (and I may be wrong), windows behind the driver don't count. Otherwise all Transit vans would have to have side windows ...

Commercial vehicles (e.g. vans) have to conform to different regulations from "cars" and don't have to have either side or rear windows.

Don't know about that. I find it hard to believe that police patrol vehicles would have tinted windows - except tints applied by the manufacturer.

As I interpret the C&U regs for Northern Ireland, they state that only windows within in the peripheral vision of the driver are subject to light transmission requirements. Hopefully, the same applies in mainland UK. Then again, IANAL and SR 1999/454 isn't the easiest of reads :-)
