.uk group proposal on GPS

I posted a while ago about a proposal to create a new group in the uk.rec hierarchy (proposed as: uk.rec.gps). I'm not related to, or have any personal knowledge of the proponent (if anything, he can be a bit of a PITA judging from other groups), but I'd be interested to hear anyones views on the way the discussion is 'going' (or not so) in: uk.net.news.config

I dunno if I'm way off the mark (s'cuze pun) but would such a 'generic' group be, as I believe, of some merit? If I've managed to get my mind firmly locked into a direction which isn't right, I'd prefer to be awakened sooner rather than later.

The discussion on unnc seems to have 'got personal', and I'm not sure I can view it objectively - so would welcome other (unbiased) views.

I haven't followed the discussion in unnc but am aware of the proposal through uk.rec.walking. My personal view (and that of most of the urw regulars who expressed an opinion a few months ago) is that uk.rec.gps would not be specific enough for most gps users. I use a gps when I am walking (or, occasionally, I leave it on the Disco dash on a long journey) so my questions are likely to relate to the use of GPS receivers when walking ..... not when sailing or Green Laning or running a driving/delivery business or anything else.

There are already a couple of gps newsgroups which I no longer subscribe to as they seem to be full of technical queries which don't interest me.

So my (completely biased) opinion is that this new group is not required and people would continue to (cross-)post in the specialist groups.

And yes, he can be a PITA! (But not always. I think he was just going through a silly phase when I first became aware of him. Hi Dave!)

One of the positive points (for me) was that the Proponent was attempting to create a 'generic' group - not necessarily with a focus upon a particular 'activity' - but yes, I know what you mean.

I'd like both technical and recreation groups specific to the UK, however I agree that the existing groups tend to be too generically technical!

Fairynuf.

I've never 'met' him apart from on unnc. He seems to have a lot of people 'not liking' him, but I'd have to say he's handled his proposal very well.

A word of caution...

Quite a few who drop in here in response to a thread elsewhere end up buying a knackered old Land Rover then lovingly rebuilding it. Not that this is always a bad thing, is it, Larry? :-)

Probably needs to escape unnc for a while. It's a jungle out (over) there...
