Utterly OT: Laptops

Jun 13, 2007 6 Replies

I've asked in all sorts of other places that I frequent, and am trying here to see if I can drum up just a few more people to help.

I'm looking for anyone who has access to a fairly recent laptop that has HD Audio as the on-board audio chipset, and who would be willing to generate, download or accept in email an audio file of 60 seconds of

1kHz tone. What is required then is to play it twice and report what they hear.

The machine can be running any sensible OS - XP, Vista or Linux, and I'd like to find an Intel Mac to try.

I promise that there's no ulterior motive except to add to the list of machines that show a certain effect.

If anyone is mad enough to try, I can be contacted via ho300_at_itsound.demon.co.uk if you make the obvious changes. I'll keep the address valid for at least a month.

If anything comes of this, I'll explain all here.

Thanks for your time. Now back to the rust and grease.

You might get a bit more response if you explained what you are trying to achive.

Well, all I'm trying to achieve is what I said. I'm trying to pull together a list of laptops that behave in a certain way with certain standard audio signals together with a list of ones that don't.

I believe I have found a way of triggering certain behaviour that relates to complaints that are fairly rife on the net about audio glitches.

I just want people without an axe to grind to help. I know the vagueness doesn't make it any easier.

Sean, if you have an appropriate laptop, I'd be delighted if you would join in. Shall I send you a file? It's about 10 megs.

Many thanks to the person who responded, taking the ratio to 8 to 2.5 (is a Mac mini a laptop?) With the 8 being the machines that fail the test.

Most mailboxes would choke having a 10M file sent to them - put it up online somewhere for us to download and we will have a go.

Yes, I know, that's why in my original posting I said

"I'm looking for anyone who has access to a fairly recent laptop that has HD Audio as the on-board audio chipset, and who would be willing to generate, download or accept in email", and left email as the third option.

I'm sorry to have made this rather convoluted when I'm asking for help, but feel I do need to get results on a 1 to 1 basis to be sure there is some attempt at validity.

Sean, I'll email you the download site.

Plays fine on:

Dell C640 XP Dell C640 Vista Ultimate Dell Precision M90 Centrino Duo XP Dell Precision M90 Centrino Duo Vista Ultimate Mac G3 OSX Mac G4 OSX Power Book G4 Mac Book Pro 2.4G Intel Core 2 Duo (OSX+XP) iMac 64 Bit Intel Core 2 Duo (OSX + XP)

Then we got bored, hope this helps.

Regards,

Sean Moore

Thanks Sean. I've added these to my list.

I would still like to get a few more results if possible, especially from people with lower-end laptops.
