Check the hoses going to the distributor Andy, for the advance/retard. Might be fecked' etc.
On or around Mon, 1 Jan 2007 19:25:40 -0000, "Andy" enlightened us thusly:
Idle speed is governed by the ecu via a bypass (about 1/2" bore hose) which runs from the back of the throttle body around to the back of the plenum where there is the idle speed stepper motor unit.
erratic or missing idle can indicate fault in this setup.
Hi Andy,
as you look at the engine, on the left side of the plenum chamber, at the back, is a thing called the stepper motor. It will have a 4 way plug going into the back of it.
disconnect the plug, unscrew the motor, and see if its gunked up
if it is, use some carb cleaner, and also have a go at where you've unscrewed it.
I find that when mine gets sooted up, then idle is all over the place - of course this also means that I have another issue to sort out, but its easier to clean the stepper right now
