VIN Sequencing

Dumb question:

Does XA123456 come before or after 4A123456?

Is this a Landrover? Are you sure you haven't missed a letter as there are usually two letters before the six figure serial number, the second one of which is usually A with the preceding letters obviously in alphabetical order.

The initial X and 4 in your example define the model year. They went sequentially through the alphabet missing out several letters and then started on the numbers.

From 1996 Land Rover have fallen in line with international norms (before that there was not total alignment!) using the following model year letters:

A - (2010) L 1994 (2020) Y 2000 (2030) B - (2011) M 1995 (2021) 1 2001 (2031) C 1986*(2012) N # (2022) 2 2002 (2032) D 1987*(2013) P # (2023) 3 2003 (2033) E 1988 (2014) R # (2024) 4 2004 (2034) F 1989 (2015) S # (2025) 5 2005 (2035) G 1990 (2016) T 1996 (2026) 6 2006 (2036) H 1991 (2017) V 1997 (2027) 7 2007 (2037) J 1992 (2018) W 1998 (2028) 8 2008 (2038) K 1993 (2019) X 1999 (2029) 9 2009 (2039)

  • Range Rover only? # Not used so far by Land Rover It's a 30 year repeating cycle.

XA123456 was therefore from an earlier model year than 4A123456.

A in the second character indicates a Solihull build.

I'm not so sure about the six digit numerical part (digits 12 to 17 of the full VIN) but I think this incremented across the model year divide so that LA123456 could be the last built in one year and MA123457 the first of the next model year.

Well it looks like one and has "L A N D R O V E R" across the front edge of the bonnet. B-)

The serial is ficticious but the XA and 4A are real. My 04 Disco is the 4A which ties in nicely. I asked 'cause the auto dipping interior mirror changes part number at XA something and it's not obvious if letters or numbers where used first. Though thinking about it now it would have to be strange sequence to have 4A before XA. I did say it was a dumb question!

Not that I can really afford to buy a new mirror but I do miss the auto dip and compass.

are they the same model series?

if so, the serial number will tell you. There won't be 2 123456's in the same model series.

otherwise try CalVin.

you think correctly, AFAIK.

the model year letter is a bit useless, really. Although there are things like model type changes (e.g. from 200-type to 300-type), but some stuff doesn't change in line with the model year, so if you have one near a model change, you end up wanting the s/n or things like axle codes.
