What is safe max on mileage on used LR?

Saw a nice LR I really like but it has 95K miles on it (1999). Is this too high to consider w/o the headache of frequent visits to the garage?

It partly depends on the engine. From the age, assuming it's a Defender, it's presumably a TD5 or 4L V8. Either should be good for plenty more mileage than that (double +).

But the ancillaries may start to need some attention once you hit a few more miles - eg bushes, shocks, etc.

If you plan to keep it a few miles, don't expect to get away with not having to do anything with it, but it'll be mostly the fiddly things rather than something major, unless you're unlucky.

Plenty of us here have much higher mileage vehicles than that, and whilst I think it's fair to say that bits do wear out and need replacing, providing it's looked after (make sure there's already a FSH) it should last ages.

Full service history. Usually with a Land Rover franchise dealer.

A Defender, I presume?

Depends on what it was used for, of course, and quality of maintenance, but that's not even half-way to the Moon. And a lot of the stuff that might need work will, when sorted, last as long again.

Suspension bushes, for instance.

Provided it has a 100% service history. My own view of both the V8 and the P38A Diesel (I'm not familiar enough with the others to form an opinion of my own yet) is you do the service early. 5,000 and a bit miles, not 6,000, and certainly never 6,001 miles. I do my oil changes at 3,000 miles or so.

As it's only 4 years old it has presumably done its mileage in longish journeys, rather than stop-start operation. That considerably reduces the wear on engine, gearbox, starter etc. If it has done road miles rather than hard offroading and has a good quality service history then I wouldn't worry about it (check the book as it is not unknown for a dealer just to stamp it up to date - make sure that the ink is in different colours!).

But above all, get an inspection done by someone who knows Land Rovers, Insist that the seller allows you to take it to a local Land Rover specialist for an MoT and general check-over (at your cost). Should cost you in the region of £100 (assuming 2 hours labour plus the MoT fee).

Good luck...
