Would this work - petrol & cooking oil???

Due to the silly price of diesel I've been mixing cooking oil & diesel in my TD300 - but of course the more cooking oil - the harder to start, especially in cold weather so can't go much more than 50/50. But what about going say 90/10 cooking oil/petrol. Would the petrol help to make better combustion? Has this ever been tried? Would work out at =A31/litre.

I'm no expert, but a friend ran his (Toyota? ute) on used cooking oil and he would start it on diesel then switch over. He said it worked well, had the car which was already old, about 2 years and sold it he said still in good shape mechanically.

Round here it seems the price of biodiesel is Âonly5p- 10p/litre cheaper than pump diesel. Might be worth it if I drove more perhaps!

What about Biodiesel and Veggie I wonder ?

I doubt the petrol/diesel mix is a good idea, but can't tell you exactly what will happen in the engine - however one reason relates to the tank. You probably know that the fuel air mixture in an engine has to be about right for it to burn - well the same applies to fuel air mixtures outside the engine.

Diesel has a very low vapour pressure - so the vapour in a diesel tank is too lean to burn. Petrol has a very high vapour pressure, and this makes the vapour in a petrol tank too rich too burn.

Diesel with some petrol added can give you a flammable mixture in the tank vapour space - this is not a good idea. I have been told it only takes about 4% petrol, but I can't confirm this, and it will depend how warm the tank gets, and what grade of petrol (winter grades are more volatile).

Of course you still have to have a static spark or dodgy in-tank pump or gauge, or something external to ignite it, but it has happened and the result was unpleasantly fatal.

I would stick to the 50/50 mix if using cooking oil (and not transport grade bio-diesel) as then you are still getting the advantage of the special additives in the regular diesel which help pump lubrication, clean valves, etc.

I'm not sure that's available here, but he got the cooking oil for free. The smell made you feel hungry though.

as opposed to pleasantly fatal?

I can think of a fair few people whose deaths could be described as such..

I think "pleasingly fatal" is more apt as in the case of politicians lawyers and estate agents and even better combinations thereof.

Tony Hi,

I have used 10 to 15% filtered cooked oil to diesel and the 100% straight vegetable fresh cooking oil on one of my 200Tdi engined discos.

Been using 100% SVO (straight vegetable oil) onto it for more than three months last year.

Performance was the same if not a bit better. Engine sounded much sweater with less diesel clatter. Engine operating temperature was lower.

But the fuel pump died a few months later. The diesel fuel pump specialist said it had to do with the fact that that generation of fuel pumps (almost same as yours) is NOT fitted with seals that can withstand long time contacts with vegetable oils. Replacement of said seals and flanges with Viton made ones makes this problem disappear. He replaced them with Viton but since then vegetable oil became more expensive than diesel fuel here in Greece and still remains so, so no point into using SVO anymore.

The other notable problem of thicker viscocity of SVO when compared to diesel fuel and the temperature is low is quite simply not applicable to us here in Greece, especially during summer when ambient temperature can reach up to 42 degrees in the shade.

Hope this helps Pantelis

Geia sou Toni,

I tried sending a direct e-mail to your e-mail address but it bounced back to me with a "blacklisted" e-mail notification. So I am replying through the newsgroup direct e-mail function.

Diesel fuel is sold at around 1.47 to 1.52 Euros per litre in my area.

SVO is sold from 1.85 (for cotton seed or soy oil) up to 4.0 Euros per litre for the olive oil.

And heating oil (which is what I now use...... ) used to be sold at 0.84 Euros per litre until May 30th when they stopped selling it with the official end of the winter discounted price.

I bought 1000 litres of heating oil, installed a big reservoir next to my gardening shed and now fill up the Discos using a small electric pump with

20 lt/hour pumping capacity.

----------------

As for the ambient temperature is is 38 degress Celsius in the shade today. But my home is right in front of the sea so I work on my computer, make my phone calls and then take my wife, our sone and our newfouland (one of our three dogs but the only one who likes to swim) and we all go for a dip in the sea.

Take care

Pantelis

No such thing, your post went to the whole group! You were of course kidding about the heating oil in the disco...

Nige Hi,

actually it is not THAT nice anymore. The sun is so strong that you can not stay under it without a strong sunscreen or wearing clothes that block the UV rays.

We go to the sun before 11.00 or after 17.00 up until 21.00 Greek time (GMT

+2)

But then again it is still much better than not having sun at all or raining all the time (sorry for that mates....)

Ian Hi,

I tried sending the reply to Toni directly to him or by using the "reply" button just to the sender (not the "reply group" one) But it kept bouncing. It seems Toni's e-mail is included in a spamming related blacklist. I had the same problem some time ago and it took ages for this problem to be rectified after contacting my internet provider. The funny thing is that the server of one of the companies I cooperate with (MANTEC) is still not allowing my e-mails to be accepted by their system...

Take care Pantelis

Derek I will try and do my best. Do you have a related site to suggest? Somewhere where I can post the photos? I do not happen to have such an account anywhere so if you wish you can suggest the one that will be more convenient for those who would like to see them.

Take care Pantelis
