"Check" light

Previously in alt.autos.lexus, "Luis" proclaimed :

replace your gas cap. It's probably bad if the light keeps coming back on.

You can also re-set the computer that triggers the light by disconnecting one of your battery cables for a minute or so. However, I agree with the previous poster that the cap is probably bad if the light keeps coming back on. Steve

Question: Back in 1989, did OBD-I computer system in Lexus have a way to tell if the fuel tank cap was inoperative? Certainly with OBD-II (1993-4 on) they did.

First ES300 was made in 1993. The ES250 was made in 1992. There were no ES models prior to 1992.
