"Check" light

I have an ES 300 1989 Lexus..I did not turn it off to service it with gas and now a "check" light is turned on in the dash..Please somebody tell me where I can deactivate this light. I thigtened the gasoline cap and the light went off, but in two days it was on again..What can I do, besides taking it to the dealer? Luis

Previously in alt.autos.lexus, "Luis" proclaimed :

replace your gas cap. It's probably bad if the light keeps coming back on.

You can also re-set the computer that triggers the light by disconnecting one of your battery cables for a minute or so. However, I agree with the previous poster that the cap is probably bad if the light keeps coming back on. Steve

Question: Back in 1989, did OBD-I computer system in Lexus have a way to tell if the fuel tank cap was inoperative? Certainly with OBD-II (1993-4 on) they did.

First ES300 was made in 1993. The ES250 was made in 1992. There were no ES models prior to 1992.

Yes (rubbing his hands together in evil thought), I know. >:^)

Typo?
