Lexus IS200z/Harrier

I would like to import a used Lexus IS200 or Harrier from abroad, possible Japan. I am told that I could secure one much cheaper and the specification would be much higher.

Any suggestions or experiences?

No. The IS200 is an Altezza in Japan and the Harrier is an RX300/370

Thanks for the info. I guess that "smart ass" response to my question was incorrect.

There is no Lexus IS200 in Japan. It's called the Toyota Altezza. The Harrier is the Lexus RX300/330. It won't be cheaper and the specification is the same.

The good thing is that both you Britons and Japanese people drive on the wrong side of the road.

Yaz,

  1. You can't buy a Lexus in Japan. Not yet at least.
  2. In 1993 I imported a Toyota Soarer, and it was a pain in the ass. I had to get all kinds of emission certification, and waivers to keep the stearing wheel on the right side. After all that, I was hit with an import tax that I thought I was exempt (I was in the military stationed in Japan).

The Lexus IS200 is the Toyota Altezza (with a 2L 4-cyl engine, not the in-line

3L 6 in Lexus IS300.) It's readily available in Japan. Yaz is from UK. So steering wheel is not an issue.

Toyota will finally roll out the Lexus brand in Japan by 2005. All Lexus cars are actually Toyotas in Japan. For example, your Soarer was the Lexus SC coupe if I'm not mistaken. My RX300 is the Toyota Harrier.

I always thought that the import tax would be waived if you have owned the vehicle for at least a year in Japan and claimed self-use in the States. Did you own the Soarer for more than a year? At least shipping the car is free for military personnel.

Shipping was free up to certain weight based on rank (I was a Corporal when I left). The Soarer is the same as the SC Lexus, but the import tax and state tax was added after fact... Thanks for pointing out that Yaz is from UK... should pay more attention to the email address, etc.
