It's a great car if you want a big, heavy, luxurious 2-place GT kind of car. Not very sporty though and awfully inefficient. They almost seem like a prettier and more reliable Japanese Eldorado. Whether its a good buy would depend on what you're getting it for, I guess.
They're reliable, but have expensive systems and expensive routine maintenance. I'd want impeccable service records, a very thorough mechanical inspection, a hard look for previous damage history, and would still budget a $2K the first year for deferred maintenance and another $1K-$1.5K/year for maintenance after that. It's the little things that can really add up - the pointer on the speedo goes out and you may be looking at nearly a grand to get it fixed. If this stuff bothers you, I'd look for a more recent car, even if you have to go downscale. Having said all this, I think an SC would be a much better bet than a Benz coupe.

They REQUIRE snow tires for typical winter driving conditions (snow & ice).
I hate the looks of that car. There are much nicer sport cars. But if you put reliability into the equation, perhaps it's not so bad. Besides, looks are subjective :-)

GREAT CARS
I have a 92 SC300 5 speed in mint condition with 93,000 miles. It has cost me very, very little. Would not think twice about getting a SC400 or SC300. You do not see to many because people are still driving them even after 10 years like mine.
Thanks for the good answer. The sc400 got all the requirement I want, luxury, sporty and reliability.
thanks.
