Or rather I think that's what it is - it belongs to my niece's husband. And it's giving problems starting from cold. Garage says it's a common fault and it needs a new flywheel sensor. Which means a new flywheel. Sounds iffy to me, but then I've never owned a diesel.

Sounds awful iffy to me. Has it been plugged in?
Yes there are issues with the 1.8 TDCi starting from cold i.e. when cranking speed is at its lowest.
A replacement sensor shimmed to the minimum usually sorts it.
Replacement flywheel not normally needed!
