1998 1.6 16v Escort won't start

As above...was driving one day and the car was hesitating slightly, nothing too bad, just every so often, then it cleared up and drove fine. About 4 miles later, it started doing it again...but much worse.

Was climbing a slight incline and the car was virtually kangaroo jumping, even with the foot hard to the floor.

Managed to get the car home and it stalled on idle, now won't fire up again.

Put more petrol in it incase I had a faulty guage - no difference. The engine sometimes catches and fires, spins for a few seconds and dies a spluttery death.

I replaced the fuel filter about 2k ago, air filter, oil filter, oil and plugs about 1k ago.

I thought there might be a problem maybe with the coil pack and the firing, does anyone think it may be worth swapping it with a known good coil pack?

Any help, advice or suggestions as to try would be much appreciated.

G.

Could be anything really- electrical. Start with checks for good spark at the plugs and fuel being injected whilst cranking. Does the tacho lift off the stop during cranking? if so this is a good indication the crank angle sensor and wiring is good and that the ecu knows the engine is turning over. If not- persue these first.

Tim,

Went out to check the tacho thing like you said and inadvertantly had the car in reverse. Cranked the engine, car jumped back, so I immediately dipped the clutch and hey presto the engine sprang to life !

For good measure, I gave it a little test rev, then took it out a little drive. 10 miles round the block a few times and not once did it play up. Stopped and restarted 3 times, not a problem.

I also noticed when I got into the car, there was a strong smell of fresh petrol, so all in all I'm starting to think that I have a fueling problem.

Any ideas what this could be? Is there a fuel pick-up for the fuel pump in the tank that could have came loose and isn't supplying the fuel system with enough petrol?

Cheers,

Is there a spark at all? Things were known to down the coil pack but generally go on 2 cyl as the pack is in fact 2 coils.

From your description it sounds like fuel pressure.... the pump is submerged in the tank... you have to drop the tank to get at it....OR DO YOU ?????.. i have been known to cut the floor under the back seat... remove the pump and when finished fold the floor back and cover with sound deadening pad !!!!! I keep a pump and attach it to cars fed from a container to diagnose this fault.

Also.... the zetec 1.6 have faults with valves sticking open in the head.... you will know from the lack of compression when cranking.... not likely to be this as the car WAS going.

Hate f*****g Fords as this group knows.

Hope this helps.

I swapped the coil out and stuck it in my mates XR3i - works fine.

I suspect something along those lines as well.

That was the old Zetec engines (pre-1996/7) with the hydraulic tappets, mine is the later model - plus, I used 5w30 in it as recommended by a few folk here so I doubt that's a problem.
