2005 Audi A6 weird heating issue

Hi all, I've got an Audi A6, 2.0 tdi. It's a 54 plate but is the new 2005 shape with twin exhausts either side at the rear.

Pretty much everything about the car us fine, except a weird heating issue. No matter what temperature I set the air con to, if it is even slightly cold outside it will blow hot air at the windscreen, and the drivers side window vent. Every other vent blows out air of the appropriate temperature, and I can't work out what's going on.

I've tried turning the supplementary heater on and off. The fan for the side window seems to be the same fan that blows through the drivers side central vent, but that middle vent gives air of the desired temperature. The only way to stop it is to manually set the aircon to not blow at the windscreen, and to physically close the drivers side window vent. this isn't ideal as I like lots of air coming through my aircon.

Anyone got any helpful suggestions please?

Thanks in advance.

that model has heater software issues, you probably need an audi dealer to check it out and reprogram it. there are lots of people with similar faults. apparently there is a TSB from Audi about it.

TSB? And if it's a software thing, would it be a free repair from Audi?

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Tech Support Bulletin.

As it's not in warranty, they will probably charge. My Leon has an issue with the climate control that means the flap motors 'tick' that can be fixed by a software upgrade to the controller.

You might get away with resetting the flaps with VCDS. Clear any fault codes, open the A/C controller, and reset the basic settings.

Skoda Fabias have a similar issue:

Thanks for the reply. Is the upgrade something that only Audi can do, or could an independent garage do it?

I've not got VagCom myself, but got this Audi and the wife has a 57 plate Octavia so it may be worth getting it to give this fix a try. Or speak to my local garage with their code reader/setter machine.

Any idea on likely cost for the upgrade, before I try getting through to my local Audi dealer?

I reckon probably dealer-only, unless your independent has a VAS (dealer diag computer), as I think only that can flash the module, sadly.

I have VCDS- we have the Leon and a Lupo, and I buy VAG cars. It's been worth every penny.

Unless it's VAG-specific it may not talk to the A/C controller.

None whatsoever, sorry. If you do it, post back.

every penny.

Having spoken to a guy at the dealer, he reckons the software update is "bad advice" and it sounds like a mechanical issue with the vents.

Very tempted to get VCDS - it'll soon pay for itself with a few code reads.

Well it'll diagnose sticking vents very easily.

Further to this, my VCDS turned up today so at some point this weekend I'll load it up and see, and post the results.
