218SD unlocks itself?

Hi all,

The 92 Rover 218SD that I was given by my mate (some mate! ) randomly unlocks (and more worringly if you have left the keys inside, 'locks' itself?) ?

I 'think' it's down to the wireless activation and other senders triggering the activity. I have been standing near the car at about

9am and I hear it unlock the 3 doors (not drivers door). This is when other folk may be remotly unlocking their own cars? It has also happened when in a supermarket car park and camp site etc. The best one was when it immobilised itself when we were about to drive off the Isle of Wight ferry (like it knew or summat?) ;-(

I would be happy to just isolate the whole thing and just retain the central locking (as I don't have an alarm fob anyway) but it all seems pretty integrated with the immobiliser etc?

Any thoughts please (re fixing it )

All the best ..

it's water in the driver's door - happens all the time.

Hi Tim,

Where do you think water is getting in and what do you think it's getting into please?

The times it does it are often when it hasn't rained for days and when I rebuilt the electric window mech the other day (welded the motor bracket up) inside the door / lock etc was bone dry?

I think, this one is more to do with the wireless part of the alarm and I would like to just disconnect that part (leaving the central locking)?

All the best ..

Condensation build up and running down the window into the door mechanism, it's a common problem on old shape 200s, basic rule is never leave your keys in the car. Best cure if it's opening itself is probably to remove the fuse and lock it manually. You could check the connector on the central locking controller which IIRC is under the drivers seat but it's probably the damp.

Is that the switch at the back of the drivers door lock Tim? I asked an auto electrician friend of mine to have a quick look at it and he did some stuff with the drivers door switch / central locking and thought it was 'ok' (at that time anyway).

It seems to happen most when with / near other vehickes (car parks, ferrys, camp sites etc) suggesting to me it's not *just* a damp problem?

Or anything in the car or boot .. as it's more likely to unlock than lock itself (but the PO warned me of the not leaving they keys in it thing) ;-)

Ok . I take the horn fuse out (for us and the neigbours) but actually like the central locking thing

Ok, well I'm happy to look at anything if it sorts it out! The autoelectrican thought the stuff was under one of the seats but I don't think he found it (would it be different if it was a Diesel?). II did pull something from behind the centre console but that just immobilised the thing completely!

All the best ..

I'm out of suggestions really - mine used to do it occasionaly and only on cold wet days. Interesting combination of british assembly, french engineering and japenese design, taking all the worst elements of each...
