ABS Fault

Hiya guys

My MK3 Golf 1.8gl has developed a intermitent fault with the ABS which is proving to be some what of a pain in the ass.

Over the past 4 months i have found that the ABS light will comes on regardless of driving conditions, speed or temperature. The car has been taken to a VW dealership and also a VW specialist, both of which are unable to diagnose the problem.

Vw said that the ECU needed replacing and would cost me £380 plus fitting and VAT, where as my local garage has said that it's one of the sensors but they are unable to confirm which one it is and will require removing and testing all four.

My question is, could the fault be caused by something else and how easy is it to locate and test the sensors (is it something which a novice could do with a vault meter).

I would prefer to replace the faulter sensor myself (if this is the cause) as i'm somewhat loathed to pay £30 per hour for something which i could do, or well at least try.

Cheers

Cuys

get a test meter thing electrical with the numbers rather than electrical with the dial thing unplug the sensors and spin the wheels the sensor that gives you the duff reading is the one you need to either clean or change over

Yep. First check the sensors are mounted the right distance from the hub & the connecters not corroded. Then measure the resistance of the sensors & check they're nearly the same , odd one outs a giveaway. If that still doesn't show anything up then jack each wheel of the ground , set the DVM to AC volts & measure the voltage at the sensor when you spin the wheel . Again look for the odd one out. Or try
