ABS Problem

I have a Fiat Coupe with ABS. I broke a phonic on the rear wheel which caused the ABS light to malfunction. This has been replaced but the ABS light still fails to go out. I assumed that along with the phonic I must have damaged the sensor as well. Today I disconnected the sensor & put a meter across it, on a 2k scale I got a reading of 1.589, I then tested the other side & got a 1.543. The fronts came in at 1.607 & 1.629.

I now think all the sensors are okay but do not know where to go from here. Basically when you switch the ignition on, the ABS light comes on & stays on.

You need to spin the wheel & check the reading varies. If not then it's most likely that the sensors too far away from the phonic .

Thanks for that will try it, but if this was the case would the light not go out when you first switch the ignition on & then come on again once the car starts to move as it it not seeing one of the phonics?

It depends on the ABS system & alas I don't know on the Coupe. You might need to clear the fault codes from the ABS system with the Fiat fault code reader, try

If it's anything like the Bravo, check the electrical connectors on the ABS pump, these tend to get a little corroded - disconnect and reconnect a few times, it sorted mine out a treat :)

Thanks for that, just been out, disconnected it, sprayed a bit of WD40 & reconnected it a few times unfortunately same problem. Looks like it might have to be a trip into Fiat which I do not fancy at all.

It's not that bad, just get them to do a diagnostic which will tell you what's up, won't cost more than 30 quid or so and at least you'll know what's wrong and not have to poke about in the cold for hours :)

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes then reconnecting? This might reset any fault codes. Just a thought.

Yep tried that made no difference though, think it's going to have to go to Fiat to run a diagnostic on it, just spoke to them & they say it's normally a sensor which is logical, but at around £150+vat each I need to make sure it's going to cure it.

WD40 is one of the worse things to spray on fine and silvered contacts. Even at 110 volts we found the stuff acts as an insulator on snap switches which had silvered contacts. Clean it off with proper contact cleaner and try again.

Unless a sensor is open circuit it won't trigger the ABS light until you start to move - then the unit realises it is getting a reading from the other wheels but not that one so flags an error. From the readings you've given, I'd say the sensors themselves are fine, might just be a broken wire or similar somewhere along the line. My ABS failed in a similar way but fixed itself and has been fine for weeks, only the airbag light has come on now to compensate :)
