Because the head gasket had let go, after 180k miles - due, in part, to a header tank that had gone brittle and was leaking under pressure, which some previous owner muppet had attempted to address with radweld-style goop. When I changed the coolant, it started to leak again - so I fitted a new header tank, which increased the cooling system pressure to a point the old HG couldn't take any more.
Don't tell me - better fuel would have prevented that, right?
