That absolutely contradicts my experience in club level special stage rallies.

========================================= Many thanks for all replies - very helpful as always. My reason for wanting to know is that I'm looking for an older car to renovate and I see many cars advertised with alloy wheels which I don't like. Knowing that changing to steel wheels is fairly straight forward helps widen the possible options.
As far as insurance is concerned, I think a call to my insurance company is needed. They're quite handy - only Bombay or Delhi!

Probably because it's often boy racers that fit aftermarket wheels. Usually larger too thus increasing the load on the suspension.
But you can ask them in advance, & unless it's unusual for that to count.

I can see how both can be true for alloy wheels.
Spanish roads - proper sharp-edged potholes and v.low profile tyres would lead to a fair bit of damage to the wheel. Irish roads too, for that matter.
Special stages - gravelly forest roads, rough as f*ck, but the holes and bumps/lumps tend to be smoother edged and the tyres aren't like rubber bands.
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Mike G" saying something like:
When I was a lad, my mate's house had a small 3-brick high wall built by his father in front of the garage doors, just far enough away to allow the doors open for human traffic, but impossible for a car to get in. I distinctly recall the reason being for rates, or the reduction thereof.
