AstraVan has got the shakes??

It's a 97 mk3 1.7TD. The old doll has developed a violent judder felt through the drive shafts but only within the 1300rpm range with foot off throttle. It does it in all gears whether I'm coasting along or going downhill using the gears to slow down, as soon as the rpm needle hits around

1300 the shakes will start - let it drop further or touch the throttle and the judder goes. With the front end off the ground there is no play whatsoever in the road wheels. There was a slight knock from the o/s wishbone bush but I've just replaced that and it's cured the knock but the judder is still there. I can go lock to lock without any unusual noises from the shafts and there doesn't seem to be any play when changing gear or blipping the throttle. Any thoughts welcome?

engine mounts is the usual reply, or a loose flywheel, but hopefully not.

Right-e-o, Will have a read up on the mounts. It seems to have started soon after I had given it a good thrash on the motorway so I guess the engine mounts would have been working harder at the time.

Has he fallen off the wagon?

It's missing its fix of veg oil as I've weaned back onto straight derv as the price is about the same as veg. Like to keep this thing plodding on just in case there's another fuel hike or shortage at the forecourts.

veg oil is only 77p a litre in these parts (essex)

50mpg, 25p off per gallon at 20% mix, that's £50 per 10000m, which won't cover halving your service interval.

Took the rear mount off today but it didn't seem bad. Had my local mechanic take a look and he said it seemed ok. Not checked the side mounts yet. I did notice though that with the wheels off the ground, if I stick it in gear and rotate the wheels back & forth there does seem to be quite a bit of free play - about 1.5inch free movement of the wheels before it takes up the slack. Not sure if that amount of play is normal or not? Was wondering if it could be worn inner cv splines where it goes into the diff or maybe the diff itself?

If the drive shafts are removed from the diff should there be gearbox oil pissing out the holes? I removed mine but no oil come out at all. There's no play in the cv joints so I'm wondering if low box oil could be the cause of the judder through the shafts?

Are the splines worn?

There's no play felt in both outer cv's joints but a very slight (about a mm) between the inner cv splines. If I rotate the cogs in the diff (they turn opposite directions) I'd say there's about 2mm of slack as i wiggle back & forth.

Take them to bits & regrease them, but that sounds like more than I remember

Sounds normal
