Could be a coincidence, but it seems likely that the tailgate wiring is breaking up in the hinge area, as you've already guessed.

First thing to do is check the fuses, then find the wiring loom or brass pins that carry the electrics to the tailgate. Try cleaning pins / wiggling wiring (as applicable) with the lights & wiper turned on and look for any effect.If nothing changes, check for 12v at the wiper/light connection points in the tailgate, using a test bulb or multimeter.
