Bodged bonded windscreen trim fitting suggestions

Hi,

I removed the trim from around the top of the windscreen (mk1 mr2) to sort out a few rust spots had started to appear.

However, I now can get it to fit back in. Originally it appears that the trim was (and still is) fitted with clips which located under the windscreen. The windscreen has obviously been replaced (at least once) and the sealant is very untidy, in places level to the top of the windscreen. Clearly before I removed it the trim was basically glued in with a variable degree of assistance from the plastic clips (which is probably why the trim was never properly flush).

My thoughts are to try to dig out (how? could it be melted) enought of the rubber stuff (in five pa#laces) that I can at least get the clips in far enought that the trim lays flush and then use more sealant to set the clips into the troughs. I can't seem to get the stuff out from under the edge of the windscreen to creat a lip.

Alternative suggestion or suggestions as to what sealant to use gratefully received.

Thanks

Jim

Whatever you do be careful; just under a year ago I removed this trim on my car thinking the poor fit ( previous owner had windscreen replaced ) was causing a leak. Stuffed some sealer down the gap & cracked windscreen trying to push those plastic clips back under screen with screwdriver. In disgust I then broke clips off, glued trim back with more sealer, ordered a new trim and in two days time man is coming to fit new windscreen pre MOT. ( I think I may be getting in some sort of loop here! )

Incidentally this was not cause of leak; Should any T-bar experts be reading this I have since determined that water is somehow getting inside the metal casing for the latching mechanism of the glass roof panels. Sharp braking then empties these on seats or laps. I have no idea how the water gets into the casing or how I can dismantle the casing to investigate, after my experience with windscreen I am reluctant to use screwdriver as a lever again, I just don't go out in the wet now.

I would be grateful for any advice as the wetsuit causes some strange looks

Best regards, Steptoe
